I am taking away all of your excuses for not giving dad a great gift this Father’s Day! Jeannie Roberts from Town Center at Boca Raton visited us during CBS 12 News at 9. Jeannie showed us original gifts from $5-$5000. The gifts ranged from simple but luxurious bars of soaps ($5) to a smart looking smartphone designed by Porsche ($1,250).

Dragon’s Breath is the new IT Summer Treat

This is the “IT” treat of the summer! Subzero Nitrogen Ice Cream in Parkland sells dragon breath and kids can’t get enough! Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze treats like fruit loops and cheese puffs. After eating it smoke comes out of your mouth and nose. Subzero also makes ice cream with the showy nitrogen trick. Treats usually go for about $5. They go through so much liquid nitrogen the owner tells me they have to have weekly shipments to replenish their supplies. We tried it live on CBS12 News at 9 and it is a lot of fun! Subzero also caters and takes the “cool” show on the road for special events like weddings, parties and bar mitzvahs!

The Parrot Always Steals the Show

You know the saying: “Never work with animals or children.” At least that was the quote from the old Hollywood actor H.W. Fields. I believe his saying still holds true today because both animals and kids tend to steal the spotlight on TV!

For World Parrot Day, Lion Country Safari brought Julio the parrot to CBS12 News at 9. We talked about parrot conservation and why these birds need to be saved in the wild. One of the biggest threats to these intelligent animals is the pet trade. It turns out these long living birds might not be the best pet after all. To be plain spoken- they are a handful and live to the age of about 40. These birds are basically as intelligent as a 2 year old human and they need just as much attention and mental stimulation! Without it these birds can be difficult.

During the commercial breaks, Julio kept saying his name in a high pitched sound. Somehow he knew when we were on the air and kept quiet. The best part? I got to dance with Julio! Unfortunately he’s a better dancer.  I now totally agree with H.W. Fields!

Scripps Florida says Grab a Beer and Learn

Scripps Florida has just started a great idea  to spread the word about the ground breaking work that they are doing at their Jupiter campus. To expose more people to their medical breakthroughs they have started a “Suds and Science” series.  The first one will be held at the Das Beer Garden on May 23rd 5-7pm. Dr Mark Sundrud will explain how he discovered an already known drug can significantly help people with Crohn’s disease. The event is designed to tell people about the life saving research that’s happening in our own backyard with an interesting yet easily understandable presentation. Having a beer in hand also doesn’t hurt! Scripps Florida currently plans to have this laid back lecture series once a month. The second event is set for June 21.

Suds and Science!

This sounds so cool! Scripps Florida Educational Programs will host it's first "Suds and Science" event tonight at the DAS Beer Garden in Abacoa from 5-7pm. This is a great way to have some fun while learning about the cutting edge research that's being done in our own backyard!

Amazing Mother Fights to Save Children after Her Own Tragedy

This morning we interviewed an amazing mother on CBS12 News at 9. Four years ago Keri Morrison’s three year old child drowned after falling into the intracoastal while visiting family. She has worked through her grief by creating the Live Like Jake Foundation. Her goal is to educate parents about the importance of swim lessons for infants and children. Her strength is evident as she started to cry when she saw pictures of her son at the start of the interview, but kept going to get her message out. If you have questions or want to learn how to get a swimming lesson scholarship go to the foundations website at www.livelikejake.com.

The Vegan Burger that Bleeds

It’s called the Impossible Burger because it does the impossible. It is a plant based burger that bleeds and sizzles in the frying pan! The secret to the “blood” is a protein extract from soy bean plants. It acts like hemoglobin in meat burgers. Harvest Seasonal Grill and Wine Bar in Delray Beach is one of he few places to offer this vegan burger. The cost is about $16.

The owner, Dave Magrogan is a vegan and he asked his chef to add the burger to the popular restaurant’s menu. While I interviewed him on CBS12 News at 9, I tried the bleeding burger. While it does taste better than other veggie burgers I’ve had, It still does not taste as good as the real deal. However, if you are on a restricted diet the Incredible Burger really is incredible.

Engaging and Creative Content Doesn’t Have to be Difficult

One of the qualities I have honed while working in newsrooms for 25 years is my ability to work under pressure while delivering a quality product. A good story teller can grab an audience’s attention with whatever resources are available. Below is a good example! I created this video on my iPhone in a short period of time.  It’s upbeat message with strong visuals instantly allowed it to out perform most other posts. It speaks volumes to the power of good content creation, technological know-how and  resourcefulness.

To say it was a labor of love is an under estimate! It took 2 1/2 years to remodel my house, but it was well worth it! My pink nightmare was really a diamond in the rough. I made this video to show you how hard work can transform anything!!!

Local Author Takes on Tough Topic and Gets Huge Response

The new book “The Stepmoms’ Club: How to be a Stepmom Without Losing Your Money, Your Mind, and Your Marriage” is a huge hit on Amazon. It was just released and already it’s the top seller for Amazon in the stepparent book section! I interviewed Kendall Rose for CBS12 News at 9AM. She lives in Palm Beach County and she wrote the book to give advice to new stepmoms after she learned the hard way about how to best blend families with as little drama as possible. Rose says there are many other books out there on the topic. She believes this book is striking a chord with people because it was written by a person who has lived through the experience and gathers advice from other stepmoms. She says learning from real experience can be better for some readers rather than getting advice from doctors and psychologists.

U.S. Polo Association Quietly Takes Over Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County has been in love with the sexy sport of polo for years, but now the game of kings is starting to attract more of a national audience. As more attention is given to the majestic sport, the spotlight is also shining on West Palm Beach and the surrounding area. This Sunday CBS Sports will broadcast the 2018 U.S. Open Polo Championship from the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington.

Most locals know that polo takes over the western part of the county during the winter, but I was surprised to find out during an interview on CBS12 News at 9am that the Polo Association’s clothing line is also based in West Palm Beach.  U.S. Polo Assn. is the official brand of the nonprofit governing body for the sport of polo. The brand has a worldwide distribution with 1,000 stores. It offers apparel for men, women, and children.  It has grown to also include footwear, travel and home goods. The headquarters of this growing empire is located in an office near Palm Beach International Airport.

As polo the sport and as a fashion icon continues to grab a foothold in American culture, it will increasingly become a powerful recruitment tool to bring more tourists and businesses to Palm Beach County.

To Work Early Mornings You Need Really GOOD Coffee

Do not settle for bad coffee if you get out of bed at 2:30AM! That’s my simple rule to survive the crazy schedule of a morning news anchor.

The owners of Oceana Coffee of Tequesta stopped by our studios today to show us the difference between generic coffee, and coffee made with love and premium ingredients. They showed me that some of the more famous and cheaper options use coffee bean scraps, while Oceana only uses the best of the best beans.

After a quick taste test, I can attest to the fact that there really is a huge difference. The Oceana Coffee was so smooth and delicious that I would gladly drink their brew black. I need a little cream with all other coffees that I drink. My take away: If I’m getting up dark and early, I deserve great tasting coffee!!! But, let’s be totally honest.  I will still drink whatever is in front of me at 2:30AM!!!
